For nearly a century, Powell Hall has been the beating heart of live music in St. Louis. Now, this beloved venue is undergoing a $140 million transformation, ensuring its legacy continues for generations to come. But restoring a century-old landmark isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about precision, expertise, and a deep respect for history. And that’s exactly what the NECA/IBEW team is helping bring to the table for its part.
The work being done by NECA contractor Guarantee Electrical and the highly skilled electricians of IBEW Local 1 is nothing short of extraordinary. Together, they are upgrading Powell Hall’s electrical infrastructure while carefully preserving its historic integrity. This project is a masterclass in balancing preservation with progress.
Modernizing a 100-year-old structure comes with challenges that require exceptional craftsmanship. The NECA/IBEW team is handling everything from updating the hall’s original infrastructure to designing custom lighting solutions that seamlessly integrate into its historic aesthetic.
One of the most intricate aspects of the renovation is the tech bar, a hub for video and audio production. With five layers of drywall to prevent acoustic transfer, every detail has been engineered to uphold Powell Hall’s world-class sound quality. In the basement, large conduits had to be mounted on spring isolators to eliminate vibration noise, ensuring that the music remains the sole focus of every performance.
The project includes a complete overhaul of Powell Hall’s electrical infrastructure, featuring:
- A new 3000-amp, 40-volt service
- State-of-the-art emergency backup and life safety systems
- Custom-built aluminum orchestra ceiling light fixtures that enhance the performance space while preserving its historic charm
Every challenge has been met with expertise and precision, showcasing the unparalleled skill of NECA contractors and IBEW electricians. Their work is setting a new standard for what’s possible in historic renovation.
As Powell Hall prepares to reopen in September 2025, this project represents more than just a renovation—it’s a cultural milestone. Thanks to the dedication of the NECA/IBEW team, St. Louis will continue to enjoy unforgettable performances in a venue that honors its past while embracing the future.
When the lights go up and the first notes fill the air, Powell Hall’s legacy will continue—powered by the expertise, craftsmanship, and commitment of NECA and IBEW.
