The future of the electrical industry is inclusive — and the women of Tucson, AZ are proving it every day. In this powerful new feature from Electric TV, created in partnership with NECA and the IBEW, we spotlight the growing presence of women in electrical apprenticeships and how they’re reshaping the construction across Arizona.
The skilled trades have long been seen as a male-dominated field, but that narrative is changing. More and more women are finding their place in the electrical industry — not only because they are capable, but because they belong. Whether it’s the satisfaction of working with your hands, continuing a family legacy, or simply seeking a stable, well-paying career, women are choosing the trades and thriving.
In Tucson, Arizona, we meet inspiring women like Rachelle Harris, who began her journey in an electrical training program while incarcerated and is now leading crews through IBEW Local 570. Louise Jones, a fourth-generation electrician, stepped up when her father needed support — and is now the Regional Director of Sabino Electric. Their stories, alongside 15 other women currently training in the Tucson JATC program, reflect what’s possible when women support one another in respectful, professional environments.
NECA & IBEW are committed to creating safe workplaces, where women are respected, mentored, and given equal opportunities to excel. Today’s union crews are collaborative and diverse — a place where skill and dedication matter more than gender.
The industry could use more women in the electrical trades. Because when women lift each other up, everyone wins.
