In Youngstown, Ohio, United Way’s mission to serve the Mahoning Valley has found a powerful new home at the Volunteer Resource Center, a dedicated space designed to support the growing success of its Satur-Day of Caring program. At the heart of this project is the NECA/IBEW Team, with Joe Dickey Electric and the skilled union electricians of IBEW Local 64 playing a pivotal role in bringing the vision for this facility to life.

The Satur-Day of Caring, held on the third Saturday of every month, was born from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. With traditional volunteer events on hold and vulnerable community members unable to access public food distribution sites, The United Way launched this outdoor-driven initiative to deliver groceries and supplies directly to the doorsteps of seniors, shut-ins, and those most in need. What began in a hospital parking lot, serving just 100 families, has grown into a large-scale operation supporting over 465 families monthly, distributing nearly 1,000 bags of food across 60 carefully coordinated delivery routes.

As the program expanded, The United Way quickly outgrew its original space. Storage became a challenge, and safety concerns mounted. Joe Dickey Electric — a proud NECA contractor and longtime United Way partner — stepped up to provide not only electrical expertise but also leadership and hands-on involvement. Supported by the dedicated electricians of IBEW Local 64, Joe Dickey Electric helped power the new Volunteer Resource Center, ensuring that the building could fully support the logistics, storage, and volunteer coordination needed to sustain and grow this vital program.

Beyond the construction work, the involvement of IBEW Local 64 and Dickey Electric goes much deeper. Their members regularly volunteer their time, resources, and even company trucks to support Satur-Day of Caring efforts. This commitment extends to recruiting volunteers from neighboring locals like IBEW 573, amplifying the reach and impact of each delivery.

This project showcases what’s possible when partnership fuels purpose. Thanks to the NECA/IBEW team, with Dickey Electric and IBEW Local 64 at the forefront, The United Way’s Volunteer Resource Center stands as more than just a building. It’s a symbol of service, community, and connection. Together, they are not only powering the facility itself but also helping to power hope across the Mahoning Valley.
